The buds for this sheng are harvested from a mixed forest of wild bitter tea bushes and trees about 100 years old. This forest is located at an altitude of 2200–2400 meters on the slopes of Ailao Mountain. After harvesting, the raw material is spread out on bamboo mats for withering — a very important process to evenly reduce excess moisture from the buds. Then, the leaves undergo 20 minutes of roasting in a wok (Shaqin) and sun drying, after which the tea is ready for packaging.
The aroma of the warmed leaves reveals charcoal-dried apples, grape syrup, honey, pine, and thyme. The first infusions are light but full of flavor and minerality: echinacea, thyme, elderberry, dried apple compote, and refined smokiness. A high-quality, soft, and lingering bitterness works wonderfully with the sensation of moisture in the mouth. The terroir is fantastic. You want to hold the tea on your tongue as long as possible, savoring the delicate evolving flavors. Elegant, dry, and mineral, it resembles shengs from single ancient trees over 1500 years old, with a subtle touch of “luffrouge” (leaf fuzziness).
Master Wang knows how to surprise us with Cha Qi. This sheng is no exception. It fills both body and mind with a sense of weightlessness. It balances the inner and outer universes.
